Locks were born out of necessity because in order to keep yourself safe you need the outside of your door locked from any and all possible intruders. The oldest known locking mechanism dates back almost 6,000 years ago and was discovered in the ancient Mesopotamian kingdom of Assyria, and the Ancient Egyptians also developed a similar technology and are given credit for creating the first real mechanical lock. All of these locks were made out of wood, just to show how much the technology has changed today.

So, let’s start small, and then go through some of the most popular locks that are on the market.
The four most common are padlocks, deadbolts, knob locks, and levers.
Padlocks:
Remember when you were in high school and you had to find a way to keep your locker safe? Well, some people used combination locks that are a form of Padlocks where you would have to create your own combination that only you know. Well, some people used padlocks that require a key, and it doesn’t attach to anything else.
That’s why padlocks are unlike every other kind of lock because they don’t need to be installed to anything; you can use them anywhere and carry them anywhere, and then just use them on whatever you need to be locked from lockers to safes.
As mentioned earlier there are two varieties of padlocks: combination and keyed. Both are used for similar reasons, and they are extremely popular in both areas.
Padlocks can have a shrouded shackle, which is an extension of the body where the shoulders of the padlock. These are extremely popular and can help keep your belongings safe but should probably not be used on your doors.
Deadbolts:
Deadbolts are generally installed on external doors, and they have a lot more options than padlocks, and they are attached and have to be installed to the door. Deadbolts are unique because they come in three primary varieties: single, double, and lockable thumb turn.
Single Cylinder is normally found on the front doors of most Americans homes. There is a key cylinder on the outside and a thumb turn on the inside to help open or close the lock. There is one weakness with these locks, is that if the access inside the house is available, like by using a nearby window, then it can be opened by just simply using a thumb turn.
Double Cylinder deadbolts require a key on both sides of the door to open, and just make the problem with the single cylinder. The only disadvantage of these locks is that you always need a key every time you need to open the door. This can be a problem in your residential property, and when there is a fire emergency.
The Lockable Thumbturn is the last deadbolt lock and is called this because it has a lockable thumbturn that works on the inside and can be locked on the inside if the owner chooses to do so or not. So, when your home, you can choose to not lock the thumb turn, and open the door easier then normal, but if you’re out of town, then it might be a good idea to keep that door locked.
Knob Locks:
These locks are used in almost every possible residential situation on exterior doors in addition to the deadbolt locks. These locks are used for the security of someone’s doors. It should be noted that these locks should never be used on the exterior of the door because the problem is that the lock cylinder is in the knob itself. Which could lead to someone being locked inside of a place, and not being able to make sure no one comes in.
These locks are used inside of your house for locking your bedroom, but not useful in protecting the exterior of your house because they are easily broken.
Lever Handle Locks:
Lever handle locks are frequently used for interior doors in commercial settings. These doors are easier to open then knob locks because they have a large push down handle, instead of a grasp and turn style used by other locks. That’s why these doors are perfect for the inside of commercial businesses especially rooms that are used a lot, but they should never be used for protecting the exterior of your business.
There are so many different locks out there, that it’s hard to keep up with what works and what doesn’t, but these are four of the most popular used locks, and there’s a lot more out there so talk to your local locksmith in Milton, Georgia, like Milton Locksmith and find what’s best for you.
